Here is an idea probably no one has ever tried – hitchhike back to DC from Burning Man in 3 months – via the Fall Foliage route. See the trees turn red, yellow, purple, orange and the mountains go from green to white. Its going to be tough – the leaves change on their own schedule connected to elevation and latitude. For the lucky volunteer – here is a rough plan:
Step 1: Head Across Arizona to the New Mexico border then to Sandia Peak for the first sign of New Mexico Fall Colors.
Step 2: Work your way north to Denver, making sure to see the Colorado Rockies Fall colors and Colorado Fall Foliage in the Front Range by mid-September. Head to Upstate New York. It gets easier after this.
Step 3: The Adirondack Fall Foliage, is the first to change, head east for Vermont Fall Foliage by the end of September. Keep on going east and hop on a local ferry for Maine Coast Fall Foliage.
Step 4: Work your way down to Boston, New York and finally DC. Take your time and travel as the leaves change. Try to make it to DC by late October. Along the way – Massachusetts Fall Foliage near Concord, New York City Fall Foliage in Central Park or along the Hudson, Pennsylvania Fall Foliage near Lancaster and Philadelphia and then hike along the Potomac for Maryland Fall Foliage.
Step 5: End the trip in early November in the Smoky Mountains. Along the way (Skyline / Blue Ridge) enjoy the tail end of the Virginia Fall Foliage season.
Its November and back home to vote. Unless home is Florida then its back home to partially punch out some confusing form which will be trucked back and forth across the state while the Supreme Court picks the next president.
Side trips from NY – Catskills Fall Foliage -ride in an open WWI-era biplane and Long Island Fall Foliage, with any luck, in a family members neighborhood.
If anyone actually does this (with proof) – I will dedicate the blog in his honor.
